Tanzania’s digital reach grows with 4.5tri/- network boost

DAR ES SALAAM: AMID their ongoing 25th anniversary celebrations, Vodacom Tanzania has announced a 4.5tri/- investment in its technological backbone.
This substantial investment has extended network coverage to over 95 per cent of the population and expanded broadband access to more than 70 per cent, including the rollout of 4G and 5G technologies.
The firm’s Human Resources Director, Vivienne Penessis noted that the investment has reinforced the company’s market position, supported job creation and played a key role in transforming the telecommunications sector in Tanzania.
She added that digital platforms have also been upgraded, enabling services such as digital loans, savings products, merchant payments and enhanced customer connectivity.
The company estimates that more than 270,000 individuals earn an income through roles connected to its operations, including employees, freelancers, agents and subcontracted service providers.
On the social front, she said the company continues to work with partners such as the Comprehensive Community-Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT) and supports health-focused programmes like the M-Mama initiative, which aims to reduce maternal mortality.
According to her, the company reports has reached over 10 million people through its various social initiatives.
“As per the available data, for the first quarter of 2025, Vodacom Tanzania holds a 31.9 per cent market share, reflecting year-on-year growth and maintaining a lead over its closest competitor,” she noted.
The company has also made progress in data security, becoming one of the first organisations certified under the Personal Data Protection Act (2022).

Ms Penessis also noted the company’s strong safety record, having recorded no workplace fatalities in the past 13 years.
Vodacom has also been recognised as a top employer for eight consecutive years.
