CHATO: TANZANIANS in large numbers paid respect to the 5th Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli who died on 17th March, 2021 in a memorial service held today in Chato, Geita region.
The memorial service marked the 4th Anniversary since Dr Magufuli died.
In his hometown, Chato, the service was attended by his family members, including his widow, Mama Janeth Magufuli, government officials, and members of the public.
The Mass took place at Rulenge, Ngara Catholic Diocese, St. John Maria Muzeyi Parish, where attendees gathered to honour and pray for the late leader. The memorial service was led by Bishop Severine Niwemugizi and attended by government officials, including the Home Affairs Minister, Innocent Bashungwa, the Minister of State (Policy, Parliament, and Coordination) William Lukuvi, Geita Regional Commissioner, Martin Shigela, the former Geita Regional Commissioner, Robert Gabriel, Chato MP Medard Kalemani, Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) Director General Masanja Kadogosa, and UVCCM Vice Chairperson Rehema Sombi.
A large number of citizens also attended the service to pay their respects, acknowledging Magufuli’s contributions to national development.
The late Dr. John Pombe Magufuli was born on October 29, 1959, in Chato, Geita region. He began his political career in 1995 as a member of the Parliament for Chato constituency, later serving in key government positions, including the Minister of Works.

In 2015, he was elected President of Tanzania, serving until his death on March 17, 2021.
During his tenure, Magufuli was known for his strict governance policies, anti-corruption stance, and massive infrastructure development projects. His administration prioritized the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the purchase of new ATCL aircraft, and the development of major roads and bridges across the country.
After Magufuli’s death on March 17, 2021, his Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in as Tanzania’s sixth President on March 19, 2021.
Following Tanzania’s Constitution, she completed Magufuli’s term, which is set to end in 2025.
President Samia made policy adjustments aimed at boosting economic growth and strengthening international relations. She introduced the “2050 Development Vision”, a long-term plan for economic and social transformation, and launched the “Royal Tour” initiative, promoting Tanzania’s tourism sector on a global scale.
Under her leadership, Tanzania has continued to implement major national projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), and the expansion of ATCL’s airline fleet. She has also worked to enhance press freedom, improve investment conditions, and strengthen regional and international diplomatic ties.
