Tanzania withdraws old 5,000/-, 10,000/- banknotes

DODOMA: THE Bank of Tanzania(BoT) has withdrawn bank notes issued before 2003 from circulation, effective from today, April 5, 2025.

The bank notes involved in the exercise are 5,000/- and 10,000/-, according to the BoT statement issued today.

The Bank of Tanzania also clarified that the 10,000/- and 5,000/- banknotes issued after 2010 will continue to circulate.

The process of exchanging these bank notes officially began on January 6, 2025, and ended today, April 5th, 2025, as outlined in Government Notices No. 857 and 858 dated October 11, 2024.

The 2003 issued bank notes, which are being withdrawn from circulation and will cease to be valid as of April 6, 2025, are as shown below.

The 10,000/- and 5,000/- bank notes, issued from 2010 issue, and their respective signatures will continue to be in circulation and are therefore not part of the ongoing exchange process.

These bank notes bear the signatures of the Minister for Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, which are between the Hon. Saada Mkuya and Prof. Benno Ndulu, Hon. Mustafa Mkulo and Prof. Benno Ndulu, Dr. Philip Mpango and Prof. Florens Luoga, as well as Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba and present Governor Emmanuel Tutuba.
