Tanzania wins global honour for healthcare digitisation
ZANZIBAR: TANZANIA has won the prestigious WSIS Prizes 2025 Award in the e-Health category, in recognition of the groundbreaking Kadi ya Matibabu digital health card, which is transforming healthcare access and delivery in Zanzibar.
The award was presented to the PharmAccess Foundation of Zanzibar and received by Mr Nassor Mazrui, the Zanzibar Minister responsible for health. The occasion was witnessed by the Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Mr Jerry Silaa, who represented President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan at the High-Level WSIS+20 Forum currently underway in Geneva from 6–11 July 2025.
The innovative Kadi ya Matibabu system has achieved remarkable success, with 93 per cent of the population already registered. It links individuals’ unique IDs with their electronic health records across all public healthcare facilities, enabling real-time data use and greatly enhancing the quality and efficiency of healthcare service delivery.
Receiving the award, Minister Mazrui said the recognition reflects Zanzibar’s strong commitment to inclusive, technology-driven healthcare. He attributed the success to visionary leadership, strategic partnerships—particularly with PharmAccess—and the dedicated efforts of healthcare workers across the region.

“This award reaffirms our vision for an equitable, resilient health system powered by digital innovation,” Minister Mazrui declared.
In addition to the e-Health accolade, Tanzania also received two Champion Awards in other categories. The AI-empowered e-Mrejesho platform from the e-Government Authority and the STEM 4 ALL project from St Joseph University of Tanzania were both recognised for their innovative contributions to digital transformation.
These two champion awards were received by Minister Silaa, underscoring Tanzania’s growing reputation for leveraging technology to drive sustainable development, inclusion and excellence in public service delivery.
