Tanzania values IITA support in boosting agro-economy, environmental sustainability

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Director of Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, John Ulanga, held talks with the Country Representative of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture(IITA), Frederick Baijuka, on strengthening cooperation and proposing new strategies to improve the agricultural sector.
The discussions took place today, April 15, 2026, at the Ministry’s sub-office in Dar es Salaam.
During the meeting, both sides emphasized the need to enhance efficiency across the agricultural value chain through research, innovation, and modern production techniques. They noted that improvements in these areas are critical for increasing productivity, boosting the competitiveness of agricultural products, and attracting investment into the sector.

The two parties also agreed that agriculture plays a strategic role in driving economic growth, increasing production, and improving livelihoods, particularly in rural areas.
They highlighted that ongoing collaboration between the government and national and international stakeholders through IITA has contributed to improved food security, poverty reduction, and environmental sustainability.
The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to further strengthen cooperation to ensure that agriculture remains a key pillar of development in Tanzania. Established in 1967 and operational in Tanzania since 1987, IITA continues to play a significant role in addressing major challenges facing Africa, including hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and environmental degradation through scientific research and agricultural technology development.
