Tanzania turns to date palms to build climate resilience, new agricultural opportunities

DODOMA: FOR farmers living in some of Tanzania’s drier areas, the search for crops that can survive prolonged dry spells is becoming increasingly important as changing weather patterns put pressure on traditional agricultural production.
In the semi-arid landscapes of central Tanzania, where unreliable rainfall can threaten harvests and household incomes, a crop more commonly associated with desert environments is being tested as a possible new opportunity, the date palm.
What began as an exploratory agricultural initiative is now gaining momentum as Tanzania, with support from international partners, examines whether date palm can be developed into a commercially viable crop capable of strengthening rural livelihoods while helping farmers adapt to drought.
The development received a major boost in Dodoma when the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), handed over critical agricultural assets to the Ministry of Agriculture through the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI).
The equipment, including irrigation systems, a screenhouse, a tractor and other agricultural tools, was handed over at TARI headquarters in Dodoma under the project “Emergency and Resilience Building Support for Smallholder Farmers Affected by Drought through Exploratory Date Palm Cultivation in Tanzania.” The project is funded by KSrelief and implemented in partnership with FAO and the Government of Tanzania through TARI.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, FAO Representative in Tanzania, Mrs Nyabenyi Tipo, described the initiative as an important milestone in efforts to diversify agricultural production and strengthen resilience among smallholder farmers affected by drought.
“The assets being handed over today, including irrigation systems, a screenhouse, a tractor and other equipment, will support continued research and practical learning on date palm cultivation, helping generate evidence and strengthen knowledge of the crop’s potential in Tanzania,” she said.
The support comes as Tanzania seeks agricultural approaches that can withstand climate-related pressures while creating opportunities for farmers to increase productivity and incomes. FAO’s work under the project has gone beyond providing equipment.
The organisation, together with TARI and the Ministry of Agriculture, has supported research, farmer training, demonstration plots and the development of technical guidance on date palm production. In February 2026, FAO reported that a draft agricultural training manual on date palm production had been validated in Dodoma, bringing together agricultural experts, researchers, policymakers and extension officers.
The manual covers production practices as well as pest and disease management, post-harvest handling and value addition. The initiative has also involved the provision of quality date palm seedlings for farmers and demonstration plots.

FAO said the seedlings were inspected to ensure they were healthy, disease-free and strong before being transplanted, while farmers were provided with practical training on cultivation and longterm management. Feasibility studies conducted under the project have indicated that, with appropriate water management and good agricultural practices, date palms could thrive in selected areas of Tanzania. Initial assessments identified Dodoma, Singida and Tabora among areas with potential for commercial date palm production.
The crop already exists in some of these areas, but efforts are now focused on understanding how it can be cultivated scientifically and commercially, rather than remaining largely at household or scattered production level. Recent agricultural discussions have increasingly focused on moving date palm production from an exploratory phase towards a structured commercial value chain.
TARI researchers have said the crop has economic potential in areas where it naturally grows but has not yet been developed at commercial scale.
For farmers, the potential significance extends beyond simply introducing another crop. Date palms could provide an additional source of income, create opportunities for processing and trading and contribute to household food security while diversifying agricultural production in areas where conventional crops may face greater climate pressure. The project is therefore looking at the wider value chain, including production, post-harvest handling, processing, marketing and value addition.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Tanzania, Mr Yahya Bin Ahmed Okeish, said the project represented more than an agricultural intervention, describing it as a symbol of growing cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Tanzania. He said Tanzania possessed significant potential for date palm cultivation and expressed confidence that investments made through the project would lay a strong foundation for future growth of the sector.
The Ambassador also highlighted opportunities for expanded cooperation between the two countries in agriculture, food security, trade, investment and wider development initiatives that could generate longterm benefits for both nations. He reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening livelihoods, promoting resilience and contributing to sustainable agricultural transformation in Tanzania.
The Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Mr David Silinde, said that the government is committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Saudi Arabia and development partners working to advance agricultural development. He commended FAO, KSrelief and TARI for their collaboration in introducing and testing date palm cultivation, noting that the initiative aligns with the Government’s broader agenda of modernising agriculture, promoting climate resilience and increasing opportunities for farmers.
Mr Silinde assured stakeholders that the Government would continue providing policy and institutional support to advance agricultural research, technology adoption and private-sector investment within the emerging date palm industry. He emphasised that lessons learned during the pilot phase would guide future interventions aimed at expanding production and unlocking opportunities throughout the value chain.
The government’s wider agricultural agenda places emphasis on improving productivity, strengthening smallholder farming and making agriculture more resilient. Tanzania’s agricultural sector remains heavily dependent on smallholder farmers, many of whom face challenges associated with rainfall variability, limited technology and access to productive resources.
This makes research particularly important before largescale expansion. The date palm project is expected to generate evidence on the crop’s suitability to Tanzanian conditions, including water requirements, soil management, pest and disease control, productivity and the economics of production. TARI’s role is therefore central to determining whether the crop can move beyond demonstration plots into a sustainable commercial industry.
