Tanzania touts for Evs whose operation is 85pc cheaper than diesel vehicles

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, has revealed that research indicates operating electric vehicles (EVs) in the country is about 85 percent cheaper per kilometer compared to petrol or diesel-powered vehicles.

Speaking at the official launch of electric vehicle usage in Tanzania through DOW ELEF AUTO EV (ZERA) Limited, Mramba stated that, on average, a conventional fuel-powered car can cost around TZS 200 per kilometer, while an electric vehicle costs approximately TZS 25 per kilometer. “These costs clearly demonstrate that electric vehicle technology is more affordable and can help citizens reduce expenses in the transport sector,” he explained.

Engineer Mramba added that the launch marks a significant step in transforming the country’s transport sector and aligns with the efforts of the Sixth Phase Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to promote investment and encourage the adoption of clean energy technologies.

The government has already created an enabling environment for the development of this technology through the National Electric Vehicles Policy Framework, established in December 2024. The policy aims to promote the production of electric vehicles in Tanzania, increase their usage, integrate the sector with renewable energy, and develop infrastructure for EV charging stations.

Tanzania has also made progress in electricity generation, with capacity exceeding 4,500 megawatts and electricity access reaching 85.5 percent by 2025. These steps are intended to strengthen various economic sectors, including modern, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transport.

Historically, Africa has over 30,000 electric vehicles, with East Africa emerging as a hub of innovation in the sector. In Tanzania, it is estimated that there are already over 10,000 electric vehicles, including motorcycles and other two- and three-wheeled transport modes.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of DOW ELEF AUTO EV (ZERA) Limited, Emmanuel Kazimoto, said the company has started by importing fully electric vehicles before introducing hybrid models locally. The long-term goal is to establish a local electric vehicle assembly plant, which will create jobs and equip Tanzanian youth with skills in modern technology.
