TANZANIA: TANZANIA is set to present a nine-project proposal worth 1,433 billion US dollars (approximately 4tri/-) at the forthcoming Conference of the Parties (COP29) scheduled for next week in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The proposal aims at raising funds for supporting the on-going climate action in the country.

Permanent Secretary in the Vice-President’s Office, Engineer Cyprian Luhemeja revealed the preparations for the conference recently in a televised interview under “Mazingira Yetu na Tanzania Ijayo” programme broadcasted by TBC1.

The international conference on environment is scheduled to run from November 11 to 22 this year offering a pivotal moment for countries to present their updated national climate action plans under the Paris agreement rooted on strengthening collective response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Eng Luhemeja said the country’s delegation to the conference will be led by the Vice-President Dr Philip Mpango on behalf of President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

He said at the COP29 there will be discussions involving the country’s delegation with a goal of attaining collective commitment and forging consensus on strengthening environment conservation and climate action.

Furthermore, he said Tanzania will have a booth at the conference for showcasing various climate action initiatives which are in place to address the climate change effects in the country.

He underlined the need for concerted efforts in order to combat climate change, urging citizens to support the government’s climate action by avoiding cutting trees but instead plant and conserve them.

The PS noted that the government is intensively investing on climate restoration through various initiatives, including the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy launched in May this year by President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

“At the COP29, we want to show the world how our country is advocating for clean cooking and hence secure development stakeholders who will accompany us in funding the national clean cooking strategy from which all citizens can have an access to affordable eco-friendly cooking energy,” Eng Luhemeja said.

Through the strategy, the country targets clean cooking use to reach 80 per cent by 2034 from the current 10 per cent.

Clean cooking involves use of gas and cooking stoves among other energy sources which do not pollute the environment.

It is a shift from traditional cooking energy, including firewood and charcoal and biomass which emit green gases effects like carbon dioxide.

Eng Luhemeja said the government is implementing the clean cooking strategy in order to prevent environment pollution caused by unclean cooking such as firewood and charcoal which for many years have been leading to deforestation.

He said the theme for the COP29 at national level is “Leverage Carbon Trading Opportunities in Clean Cooking and Alternative Sources of Energy”

Eng Luhemeja said the theme intends to promote eco-friendly cooking and build capacity for climate resilience in bid of boosting the country’s economic growth and sustainable development at large.
