Tanzania to host global conference on climate finance accountability

DAR ES SALAAM: INSTITUTE of Public Accountability (WAJIBU) in collaboration with the Vice President’s Office (VPO) has organized the International Transparency and Accountability Conference-(TAC 2023) which will focus on strengthening accountability for climate action.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam on Monday afternoon, WAJIBU’s executive director FCPA Ludovick Utouh said the two-day event will be held in Arusha from 28th to 29th September 2023.

The ITAC, according to Tanzania’s retired Controller and Auditor General (CAG), is expected to bring together over 300 participants who will attend the meeting physically and virtually to discuss five issues regarding climate action.

He said this year’s event will be heralded by the theme: ‘Strengthening Accountability for Climate Action’ whereas various stakeholders from both public and private sector, civil society organisations, diplomats, academicians, researchers and environmental experts will be discussing the ‘Science of climate change.

Other topics are ‘The climate change financing; ‘Best practices and challenges in tracking and monitoring climate finance flows’, ‘climate change and fiscal risks, private sector engagement in climate change financing and the accountability mechanism for private finance.

The fifth topic, FCPA Utouh added, is ‘Innovative mechanism for climate change mitigation and adaptation’.

WAJIBU boss said so far participants from six African countries namely, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe Nigeria, Kenya and hosts Tanzania have confirmed to attend the meeting.

“The meeting is expected to shed light on various challenges and available opportunities on public financial accountability in funding climate change related programmes as well as identifying strategies geared to strengthening financial accountability systems,” he added.

He welcomed all transparency and accountability stakeholders around the world to attend the ITAC 2023 which addresses various challenges on climate change action financing.

The former CAG said other professionals from areas of areas of accountancy, economics, law, geology and community development will learn and offer their advice regarding the meeting topics.
