Tanzania to host 2025 CECAFA Women’s Championship

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has unveiled its 2025 competition calendar, with Tanzania emerging as a central hub for major regional football tournaments.

Among the key events, the CECAFA Women’s Senior Championship will headline the action, set to take place from June 12 to 22 in Dar es Salaam.

The announcement reinforces CECAFA’s ongoing commitment to promoting women’s football and strengthening regional competitiveness ahead of continental challenges.

According to Yusuf Mossi, the CECAFA Competitions Director, it has been strategically scheduled to take place before the start of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which is set for next month.

“The championship will serve as crucial preparation for Tanzania, who will represent the region at WAFCON, and will also benefit other national teams as they gear up for the WAFCON 2026 qualifiers scheduled for October this year.

“Hosts Tanzania, along with Uganda, Burundi and South Sudan, have already confirmed their participation, with more teams expected to be announced in the coming days.

“Following the women’s championship, CECAFA will stage the first-ever Beach Soccer Championship from July 7 to 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.

This inaugural event signals CECAFA’s intent to broaden its scope and embrace emerging football disciplines across the region. The rest of the year will also be action-packed, with several high-profile competitions lined up,” Mossi said.

Tanzania will again play host to two more major tournaments: the CAF Women’s Club Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers from September 3 to 19 and the prestigious Dar Port Kagame Cup from September 13 to 27.

Ethiopia will host the AFCON U-17 CECAFA Qualifiers from November 15 to 30, while the CECAFA African Schools Football Championship qualifiers are set to conclude the year from December 1 to 5.

However, CECAFA has also announced that the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup and the CECAFA U-20 Women’s Championship will not take place in 2025.
