Tanzania to chair COP30 negotiating council
DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA is poised to chair the Negotiating Council at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, 2025.
The Tanzanian delegation is expected to be led by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Secretary-General in the Office of the Vice President, Engineer Cyprian Luhemeja said recently in Dar es Salaam that in addition to chairing the Negotiating Council, Tanzania will also chair the African Environmental Experts Council.
“This means Tanzania will lead discussions and negotiations concerning environmental issues on behalf of Africa at COP30,” he said.
He was speaking during a National Strategic Meeting on Tanzania’s participation in COP30.
For Tanzania, COP30 is not just a negotiation meeting but an opportunity to establish partnerships and mobilise resources to protect its people, ecosystems and economy from the growing impacts of climate change.
“It should be noted that Tanzania has already launched the National Development Vision 2050 (Vision 2050), reaffirming the government’s commitment to pursuing resilient and low-carbon development pathways,” he said.
Director of the Environment Department in the Office of the First Vice-President, Ms Farhat Mbarouk insisted that addressing climate change requires significant funding.
She said Tanzania’s participation at COP30 will help open doors for stakeholders to support environmental conservation and protection efforts.
“Beyond funding, we will also focus on capacity building within government and civil society institutions. We will also explore new technologies that will help us tackle climate change, particularly in reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Ms Mbarouk added.
She also expressed satisfaction that the Chair of the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) is from Tanzania Dr Richard Muyungi, who serves as the President’s Advisor on Climate Change and Environment.
“This presents a significant opportunity for Tanzania,” she noted.
The Executive Director of CAN Tanzania, Dr Sixbert Mwanga said the meeting will help prepare all stakeholders to present a unified voice, enabling Tanzania to achieve its objectives at COP30.
Following a successful participation at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, last year, COP30 marks a historic moment for the global climate agenda.
It is expected to outline a roadmap for accelerated and enhanced climate action, especially regarding mitigation.
