Tanzania teams struggle in CAVB Zone V opening

UGANDA: TANZANIAN teams faced a challenging start on the opening day of the 2025 CAVB Zone V Volleyball Club Championship, which kicked off yesterday in Kampala, Uganda.

The tournament, featuring top men and women’s teams from the region, will run until March 3. Tanzania is represented by two men’s teams, Jeshi Stars and Tanzania Prisons, while the Tanzania Prisons women’s team is competing in the women’s category.

In their opening women’s Group A match, Tanzania Prisons struggled against KCB Nkumba of Uganda, suffering a 3-0 defeat (23-07, 25-11 and 25-10) at Lugogo stadium.

The Ugandan side dominated throughout, leaving Tanzania Prisons searching for a way to bounce back into the competition.

In the men’s category, Jeshi Stars put up a strong fight but ultimately fell 3-1 to Rukinzo (Burundi) in their Group A clash at Old Kampala Arena. Meanwhile, Tanzania Prisons took on KAVC (Uganda) in their Group C match yesterday evening.

The men’s tournament features over 12 teams, divided into three groups: A, B and C, while the women’s competition has nine teams in two groups.

Ahead of their departure to Kampala, Tanzania Prisons head coach Fredy Mshangama and his squad expressed confidence in their preparations and determination to compete at a high level.

Mshangama also thanked the Tanzania Prisons leadership for their support and trust in the team and insisted participating in a major tournament like this is, first and foremost, a learning experience.

As the competition progresses, Tanzania’s representatives will look to regroup and put up stronger performances in their remaining matches as they return to regional competition after several years of absence.
