Tanzania steps up collaboration with private firms to implement Education Policy 2014

DODOMA: THE Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has stepped up collaboration with private education stakeholders to support the implementation of the Education and Training Policy 2014, as part of broader efforts to improve the quality of education and expand learning opportunities across the country.

The renewed push for cooperation emerged during a meeting between the ministry and owners of private schools held in Dodoma, where both sides discussed ways of strengthening public–private partnerships (PPP) in the education sector.

Speaking during the meeting, the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof  Adolf Mkenda, said closer collaboration between the government and private education providers is essential for the successful implementation of key priorities outlined in the revised education policy.

He explained that the policy emphasises the introduction of compulsory ten years of education and the strengthening of vocational and skills-based learning, which are expected to equip students with practical competencies needed in the labour market.

Prof Mkenda said the effort to deepen cooperation with the private sector also follows directives from the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has repeatedly underscored the importance of collaboration between public institutions and private investors in accelerating reforms in the education sector.

He recalled that the President highlighted the significance of such partnerships during the launch of the revised education policy on February 2, 2025 at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre.

According to the minister, the government recognises the growing role of private education institutions in supporting the expansion and improvement of the country’s education system.

Private sector investment, he noted, has contributed to the expansion of education infrastructure, widened access to schooling for students and strengthened the delivery of quality education services.

The ministry, he added, will continue engaging private sector stakeholders to ensure that the goals of the ongoing education reforms are achieved.

Private school owners who attended the meeting welcomed the government’s decision to involve them in discussions on policy reforms and the implementation of key education programmes.

They pledged continued cooperation with the ministry in implementing compulsory ten years of education and expanding vocational and skills-based training to help prepare graduates for both employment and self-employment.

Both sides agreed that stronger collaboration between the government and private education providers will enhance efficiency in the delivery of education services and help ensure that every child in Tanzania has access to quality education.
