Tanzania sees remarkable progress in its preps to co-host AFCON finals

ARUSHA: TANZANIA has intensified preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations saying preparations have reached the advanced stages to enable it  meet the standards set by the Confederation of African Football before the event’s kick off.

Speaking in Arusha today, July 3, 2026,  on behalf of the Chairperson of the National Permanent Secretaries’ Committee for AFCON 2027 preparations, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Hassan Abbasi, said the government has put in place comprehensive plans to ensure the championship is successfully hosted.

Dr Abbasi led the committee on an inspection tour of key facilities, including the Mgambo, Engutoto and Magereza training grounds, the new Arusha Stadium, as well as roads leading to and from the stadium being upgraded by TANROADS and TARURA.

He said the tournament will be historic as it will be the first AFCON to be jointly hosted by three East African countries, attracting millions of football fans from across Africa and the world.

“This is our moment to uphold the country’s reputation. Everyone must be ready to play their part in ensuring AFCON 2027 is delivered successfully and in line with international standards,” he said.

He urged contractors implementing infrastructure projects to speed up construction to ensure all facilities are completed on schedule.

Arusha Regional Administrative Secretary, Dr Toba Nguvila, said the region has intensified preparations, including upgrading sports infrastructure, improving water supply, healthcare services, communications and electricity to ensure all essential services meet the required standards before the tournament begins.
