Tanzania sees plenty of fortunes in hosting Miss World pageant
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government says the Miss World pageant, which is expected to be held in Tanzania, will be used as an opportunity to showcase the country’s ethnic communities, traditions and culture on the international stage.
Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda made the remarks while speaking to journalists about preparations for the pageant. He said Miss World contestants from different countries would be given an opportunity to choose a Tanzanian ethnic community and learn about its culture.
He said each contestant who chooses a particular community would have an opportunity to learn about its traditions, customs and other aspects of its way of life before representing it on the international stage during the competition.
According to Makonda, the initiative is intended to use the participation of contestants from different countries to promote Tanzanian culture to millions of people around the world who follow the pageant.

He said Tanzania is home to numerous ethnic communities with diverse cultures, adding that the government sees the pageant as an important platform for showcasing them internationally and increasing global awareness of Tanzanian culture.
“Some may be Germans, Italians, Kuwaitis or Chinese, and they could choose the Watengwa, Sukuma or Maasai communities and learn about their culture,” Makonda said.
He said the initiative would be implemented in collaboration with the organising committee and various stakeholders to ensure that the communities involved have an opportunity to participate in showcasing their cultural heritage.
Makonda added that the pageant is expected to take place in various locations, including Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Arusha, saying the move would help spread the economic and other opportunities arising from the arrival of international visitors across those areas.
