Tanzania seeks to expand the statistical network to its capital, Dodoma

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government plans to have a branch of the East African Statistical College (EASTC) as it continues to support the college to ensure the country’s data and statistics are used productively for the current World and even for the 2050 vision that aims to stimulate development.

This was said today in Dar es Salaam by the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Elijah Mwandumbya at the 60th anniversary of the East African Statistical College (EASTC) and added that the ministry will continue to collaborate with them as there is a request for the college they request for the Dodoma campus, if not to reduce then to end the challenge.

“The college has been a pillar for obtaining official statistics experts in the country and Africa. We appreciate the great contribution of this educational institution. The act of working with the college helps to obtain appropriate statistics for use by the country.

He added, “The Ministry of Finance will provide professional partnerships in the field of statistics to bring a contribution to our nation. No policy is submitted to parliament without research to serve the citizens, so the college will help improve information.

For his part, the Director of the EASTC, Dr. Tumaini Katunzi, said the college is facing the challenge of classrooms due to the increase in students, availability of space, and shortage of teaching materials due to the programs they offer.

He said the college plans to provide answers to the challenges facing the world at present, such as the digital age, by introducing a hybrid teaching method as well as improving the IT system.

“We serve 19 countries, we have achieved success in terms of education, we have added 11 programs, and now there are 13. In 1965, we started with one program, and in 1966, one more was added. We made changes and became a higher education institution. We have added master’s programs in 2013, a master’s degree in agriculture in 2014.

Dr. Katunzi said that in 2021, they added three programs and two technology programs, and a digital library.

“We will continue to add programs, while the goal is to make the college a center of excellence. We have sent teachers to 28 courses; some of them are on probation, and others are continuing their studies.

He said that to expand the college, they expect to open a branch in the Dodoma region.

In addition, Katunzi has asked the government to acquire the Dodoma campus and the government to continue using the college at a professional level for public servants, since those who benefit most from the college are people from outside.
