Tanzania seeks private sectors in China, Korea to construct its strategic roads under PPP framework

BEIJING: THE Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega has embarked on a high-level tour of China and South Korea to court private investors for the construction of strategic roads in Tanzania through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework.
A statement issued by the Ministry stated that the initiative seeks to mobilise private capital for roads linking Tanzania with neighbouring countries, major ports and production centres, as well as domestic and international markets.
The targeted roads will also include key routes connecting commercial areas and regions with strong tourism potential, in a move expected to strengthen trade, transport, tourism and economic activity.
During his visit to China, Minister Ulega met and held meetings with potential investors and inspected major infrastructure projects being implemented under the PPP model.
According to the ministry, under the arrangement, private companies can finance and construct roads, bridges and other infrastructure in partnership with the government under agreed terms.
“Once investors recover their costs and earn the agreed returns, the infrastructure is transferred to the government, allowing the public to retain ownership of the assets,” part of the ministry’s statement read.
Additionally, the minister stated that some investors from China and South Korea have already expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities in Tanzania.
In South Korea, Minister Ulega is expected to be among the key speakers at the Global Infrastructure Forum, which begins today in Seoul.
The international forum brings together major players in infrastructure and construction, including government representatives, financial institutions, investors and industry experts.
The minister’s Asian tour is aimed at expanding strategic partnerships and attracting private-sector capital to infrastructure projects that can support Tanzania’s economic transformation.
