Tanzania, Russia focus on mineral value addition, technology transfer to bolster their ties in mining sector

SAINT PETERSBURG: TANZANIA has emphasised the importance of strengthening cooperation with the Russian Federation in the mining sector through domestic mineral value addition, the transfer of modern technologies and the development of local expertise.

The call was made by Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr Steven Kiruswa, during the Russia-Africa Raw Materials Dialogue held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from October 12 to 17, 2026. The conference brings together more than 1,000 participants from over 40 countries to discuss cooperation in the development and utilisation of mineral resources.

Dr Kiruswa said the partnership should deliver mutual benefits by strengthening mineral processing in producing countries rather than exporting raw minerals. He noted that this approach would stimulate economic growth, create jobs, promote industrial development and increase revenues for resource-rich countries.

He also stressed the importance of technology transfer and equipping African youth with skills in mineral exploration, mining and mineral processing. He thanked the Russian government for providing training opportunities in modern technologies.

In a related development, Dr Kiruswa invited Russian companies to invest in Tanzania and accelerate the implementation of mining projects for which they had already obtained licences. He said the government had established a conducive investment environment for investors who comply with the country’s laws and regulations.

He emphasised that the cooperation should deliver measurable results through productive projects, mineral value addition and the development of local expertise to ensure that Tanzanians derive greater benefits from the country’s mineral resources.
