Tanzania Rugby body goes to polls today
ALL is set as Africa Rugby’s top official Andrew Owor is in Dodoma to grace the Tanzania Rugby Union’s General Election in the Tanzanian capital today.
The election to be also attended by officials from the National Sports Council (NSC), witnessed aspirants undergoing screening at the PSSSF building ahead of today’s election.
The Interim Secretary General of the rugby governing body(TRU), Anthony Dawa told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ on Friday that they expect the Africa Rugby Confederation’s Vice-president to be in Dodoma to witness the election.
“We planned to have Africa Rugby Confederation President Khalid Babbou in Dodoma, but due to other responsibilities he could not manage to come.
He added that vice president Andrew Owor has finalised travelling procedures and hopefully he would be in Dodoma for the occasion.
“NSC will supervise and ensure that the whole process goes as planned in accordance with the constitution and the Rules and Regulations of the Tanzania Rugby Union as well.”
“We are counting on the Africa Rugby boss to be the witness of this important and historic day in Tanzania Rugby,” he elaborated.
NSC Information Officer Najaha Bakari said that preparation is complete and everything is in place.
She named the posts to be contested as TRU president and vice president posts, Secretary General, Rugby director, treasurer and six committee members.
Those wishing to contest for the posts must be Tanzanians and should have never been found guilty of any crime.
TRU under interim president Jacob Jonas entered the office two years ago with a mission to revive the game.
Since they enter the helm, they have worked hard to revive the game in the country.
TRU set short-term plans including to promote the game by staging several tournaments starting from grass-roots development programmes.
Jonas was quoted in this paper as saying that to implement a grass-roots programme the union has already prepared 60 coaches to oversee it.
