Tanzania rescues 10,782 street children from a dangerous environment
DODOMA: A total of 10,782 children who were living and working on the streets have been rescued from dangerous environments across the country between July 2024 and April 2025, the government has announced.
Presenting the figures in Parliament, Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, said that of the rescued children, 6,108 are boys and 4,674 are girls.
She revealed that 2,410 of the children were rescued through a special nationwide campaign that began in April this year.
“Among those rescued, 2,410 were identified through a special campaign running across all regions, which started on April 7, ahead of the International Day for Street Children. This day was marked for the first time at the national level in Mtwara Region,” said Dr. Gwajima, adding that the campaign is ongoing.

In addition to efforts targeting vulnerable children, the ministry, in collaboration with the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI) and the Ministry of Health, has identified 4,975,473 elderly and vulnerable individuals in need of social welfare services across 26 regions by April 2025.

Dr. Gwajima stated that 2.1 million of these individuals, comprising 1.01 million men and 1.18 million women,n have been issued identity cards that qualify them for free medical services and health insurance coverage during the period from July 2024 to April 2025.
