Tanzania reaps gains from PFMRP drive as number of taxpayers swells to 2.5m in 2026

DAR ES SALAAM: TREASURY’S Permanent Secretary, Dr Natu El-Maamry Mwamba, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining and strengthening public financial management systems by building on the achievements of the Sixth Phase of the Public Financial Management Reform Programme (PFMRP) in the programme’s seventh phase.

She said the programme had recorded significant achievements and tangible results in improving the management of government revenue and expenditure, accountability, efficiency and transparency in public financial systems.

Among the key achievements is the introduction of the National e-Procurement System of Tanzania (NeST), which has helped reduce the time required for procurement processes and improve value for money in public procurement.

“Other achievements include an increase in the number of registered taxpayers from 1.6 million in 2023 to 2.5 million by June 2026, enabling the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to strengthen tax revenue collection and improve its performance in meeting revenue targets, including through door-to-door tax collection campaigns,” Dr Mwamba said.

She added that other milestones included the development and approval of the 2025 National Supply Chain Management Policy, the construction of the Ministry of Finance building in Geita Region to improve service delivery, and the development and integration of non-tax revenue collection systems into the TAUSI platform used by Local Government Authorities.
