Tanzania pours 434.5bn/- for Kisiwa Mgao port

MTWARA: TANZANIA has allocated 434.5bn/- to the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) for the construction of the Kisiwa Mgao Port in Mtwara region.

TPA has signed a contract with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).

This was announced today, April 4, 2025, by the Manager of the Mtwara Port, Ferdinand Nyathi, during a special forum to mark the fourth anniversary of Samia Suluhu Hassan’s presidency, which was held at the Bank of Tanzania conference hall in Mtwara.

Nyathi explained that the construction of the port has officially begun, and the contractor is on site. He emphasized that once completed; this project will significantly contribute to boosting the economy of the Southern Region, particularly in the transportation of minerals.

The Kisiwa Mgao Port, being built in the Mtwara Rural District, will be dedicated to transporting bulk cargo such as coal, sulfur, and cement.

Furthermore, Nyathi revealed that the government has expanded the Mtwara Port, which includes improvements to the docking areas, road infrastructure, weighbridges, and IT systems.

He also highlighted that the Sixth Phase Government has invested 157.8bn/- in the construction of a new dock at the Mtwara Port, with modern equipment purchased for over 100bn/- as well as the acquisition of a modern boat for over 20bn/-.
