Tanzania pledges to bolster social protection systems for older people

TUNDUMA: THE Tanzanian government has pledged to continue strengthening social protection systems and services aimed at improving the welfare of older people in the country, including access to quality healthcare, safe housing and an enabling environment that allows them to participate fully in national development activities.

The commitment was made by Deputy Permanent Secretary, Advocate Amon Mpanju, who delivered remarks on behalf of the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups during the Elderly People’s Conference in Songwe Region.

He added that the government, through the relevant ministries and in collaboration with stakeholders from various sectors, continues to create an enabling environment to ensure older people have access to services, opportunities and platforms for participating in social and national development matters.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the National Council of Older Persons, David Sando, urged older people to remain at the forefront of safeguarding peace and stability by passing on good values, patriotism and respect for the rule of law to younger generations.

He stressed that older people have a responsibility to use their experience to condemn misconduct that could threaten peace and contribute to moral decay in society, while guiding young people in preserving national values.

Mbozi District Commissioner, Farida Mgomi, who was the guest of honour, said the Government recognises, respects and values the contribution of older people to national development, emphasising the importance of involving them in decision-making processes and various development activities.

The conference provided an opportunity to strengthen communication and cooperation between the Government and older people, as well as discuss strategies for improving their welfare and promoting their contribution to maintaining peace, strengthening moral values and advancing national development.
