Tanzania partners with global investors to advance LNG project in Lindi

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government is working with international investors to advance the long-awaited liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Lindi, with Energy Minister Juma Zuberi Homera saying efforts are underway to ensure its implementation begins.
The Minister revealed this in a discussion with executives from Shell and Equinor, two international companies involved in the proposed LNG development in Dar es Salaam on Thursday where he noted that the project is critical to expanding Tanzania’s energy supply, supporting industrial growth, creating jobs and increasing government revenue.
According to the minister, the government is committed to working with the investors to move the project forward, citing its potential contribution to the country’s Development Vision 2050.
“We all recognise the importance of this project to national development, including industrial growth, employment, government revenue and social services for communities surrounding the project area. Our goal is to see it implemented,” he said.

Additionally, Mr Homera urged the project partners to ensure that local communities are involved throughout the implementation process and benefited from social development initiatives in areas surrounding the project.
Furthermore, he commended Shell, Equinor and the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) for collaborating in the construction of Likong’o Primary School in Likong’o village, Lindi Region, where the LNG project is expected to be located.
Dr Homera said community development should remain part of the project’s benefits as preparations progress.
For their part, the Shell and Equinor representatives said their companies will continue working with the government during the various stages of project preparation describing the proposed development as beneficial to Tanzania and the companies participating in the investment.
