Tanzania offers training in gemstone processing to promote value addition

ARUSHA: The Tanzania Gemological Centre has stepped up efforts to promote value addition in Tanzania’s mining sector by offering affordable training in gemstone and rock processing as a way of opening opportunities for youth and solving employment challenges.

Located in Arusha, the centre is equipping youth and stakeholders with practical skills in lapidary, including cutting, grinding, polishing and designing high-value gemstones for the market.

TGC, which operates under the Ministry of Minerals, is focused on enhancing the value of the country’s mineral resources through innovation, modern processing and design.

Information from the Ministry of Mines on Wednesday noted that in addition to training, the centre also produces and sells a range of handmade gemstone jewellery crafted by Tanzanians, offering both local and international customers unique products.

According to the ministry, the initiative aligns with the government’s priority to strengthen value addition in the mining sector as a pathway to job creation, economic growth and increased national pride in Tanzania’s natural resources.

TGC has outlets at its headquarters within the AICC complex in Arusha and at Kilimanjaro International Airport, making its products accessible to a wider market.

The centre has encouraged the public to enrol in its programmes to gain skills, tap into business opportunities and contribute to the growth of the mining industry.
