Transport Ministry names SGR, TAZARA the top priorities in its 2.872tri/- budget

DODOMA: Tanzania’s Ministry of Transport has outlined eight priorities for the 2026/27 financial year aimed at strengthening the country’s transport infrastructure and services, including railways, ports, aviation, and professional training within the sector.

Presenting the ministry’s budget in Parliament in Dodoma on May 13, 2026, Transport Minister Makame Mbarawa said the priorities will focus on implementing major development projects and improving transport services across different parts of the country.

Professor Mbarawa stated that key priority areas include continuing the construction and operation of Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), as well as rehabilitation and modernization of the MGR and TAZARA railway networks.

The ministry will also continue improving port infrastructure and services, strengthening the aviation sector, and advancing the construction and rehabilitation of ships in the country.

Other priorities include enhancing weather services, strengthening regulation, quality, and safety in transport services, and improving training institutions within the sector to increase efficiency and professional skills among personnel.

For the 2026/27 financial year, the transport sector has been allocated a total of 2.872tri/-. Of this amount, 126.04bn/-, equivalent to 4.38 percent of the total budget, has been allocated for recurrent expenditure, while 2.746tri/-, equivalent to 95.62 percent, has been earmarked for development projects.

Professor Mbarawa further noted that out of the recurrent expenditure allocation, 113.5bn/- will be used for employees’ salaries, while 25.906bn/- will cover other operational expenses within the ministry.
