Tanzania makes progress in anti-corruption efforts

BEIJING, CHINA: TANZANIA has made significant progress in the fight against corruption by strengthening its legal and institutional frameworks, including the establishment of the High Court Corruption and Economic Crimes Division.

The achievements were highlighted by the Director General of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), Mr Crispin Chalamila, during the 5th Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities conference, organised by the GlobE Network, held in Beijing, China.

Mr Chalamila was presenting a topic on ‘Anti-Corruption and Institutional Legal Framework in Tanzania’ to heads of Anti-Corruption Authorities participating in the conference.

The five-day conference which began September 24 to 27, was attended by 219 anti-corruption authorities from 121 countries, including Tanzania.

The PCCB Director General shared insights on how the legal and institutional framework in Tanzania facilitates successful anti-corruption efforts, while assuring continued collaboration with other stakeholders to enhance these efforts.

“Tanzania will continue to work with the GlobE Network in particular and other regional anti-corruption initiatives in shaping the future of the global fight against corruption,” said Mr Chalamila.

He added that, “Tanzania is eager to effectively utilise the platform provided by the GlobE Network to connect with law enforcement practitioners from various countries to share information, advance investigations, prosecute transnational corruption crimes and trace and recover stolen assets.”

The conference included a sideline event of a High-Level Forum (Workshop of Heads of Anti-Corruption Authorities) where participants shared their experiences on how governments successfully combat corruption in their nations.

Areas discussed included global vision, legal and institutional frameworks, operational aspects of the GlobE Network and partnership building.

Mr Chalamila, had an opportunity to meet and engage with other leaders from several Anti-Corruption Authorities attended the conference, aiming to strengthen collaboration between PCCB and those authorities.

The leaders he met were from the National Commission of Supervision of China in Beijing (NCS), the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) of Hong Kong and the National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) of South Africa.

Their discussions were centred on investigation training, asset recovery, forensic evidence, intelligence, corruption prevention, public education, tools and training visits.

Collectively, the leaders commended the Tanzania PCCB’s efforts in fighting against corruption, in collaboration with other regional and international bodies and pledged to continue this cooperation.

In another development, Mr Chalamila paid a courtesy call on Tanzanian Ambassador to China, Mr Khamis Mussa Omar and introduced himself.

Welcoming the Director General, Ambassador Omar commended the PCCB for its efforts in combating and preventing corruption in the country.

He insisted the importance of maximising the existing cooperation between the governments of Tanzania and China, noting that there is much to learn.

The GlobE Network was established in 2021 with the aim of exchanging information, experiences and expertise in the fight against corruption and PCCB joined the network in 2022.
