Tanzania lifts the lid on its move to make Muhimbili a hub for quality healthcare services in Africa

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has explained that rebuilding the Muhimbili National Hospital is not just a health project but a strategic investment with broad national and international interests in the medical, education, research, and healthcare economy sectors.

Speaking today, May11, 2026 , in the parliament in Dodoma while presenting the 2026/27 Ministry of Health budget, Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa said the project aims to make Tanzania a hub for quality and affordable healthcare services in Africa while reducing the costs of sending patients abroad for treatment.

 

“The new Muhimbili project is not just a health project but a strategic investment in the modern economy as it will reduce medical referrals abroad, increase medical tourism, attract investors and international organizations as well as help develop the talents and expertise of health professionals in the country.” said Mchengerwa,

He also added that the completion of the new Muhimbili will raise the hospital from level three to level four in terms of quality of service delivery by international standards, a step that will increase Tanzania’s ability to provide more modern medical services, training and research.

It will be recalled that the construction of the New Muhimbili is part of a long-term plan that began in 2018 and is expected to be implemented over a period of five years at a 1.2 tri/- .

 Of this amount, approximately 363.9m  US dollars is a loan from South Korea, while 104.572m US dollars is a contribution from the Tanzanian government for taxes, site preparation, and other costs.
