Tanzania launches a 262bn/- project in efforts to empower women and girls
GEITA: THE Tanzanian government has launched a 262bn/- project aimed at advancing gender equality, marking a major milestone in efforts to empower women and girls across the country.
The Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Dorothy Gwajima, inaugurated the PAMOJA (Project for Advancing Gender Equality in Tanzania) initiative during the International Women’s Day celebrations on March 8, 2026, in Geita Region.
The event carried the theme: “Rights and Equality for Women and Girls: Inclusive Foundation Towards Vision 2050.”
Speaking at the launch, the minister said the project seeks to expand economic opportunities for women, strengthen efforts to eliminate gender-based violence, and improve services for survivors.
She emphasized that investing in women and girls is a critical strategy for building an equitable society in line with Vision 2050.
“Women’s empowerment is key to sustainable development. I urge the beneficiaries to embrace this project, cooperate fully, and ensure it delivers lasting benefits to communities,” the minister said.

Additionally, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, John Jingu, stated that the project will be implemented in 10 regions and 40 councils across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, targeting broad-based socio-economic empowerment.
The World Bank representative, Aun Ali Rahman, praised Tanzania for taking bold steps to economically empower women and promote gender equality while pledging continued partnership with the government to implement inclusive development projects nationwide.
The PAMOJA project is expected to significantly advance women’s economic participation and strengthen community development, reinforcing Tanzania’s commitment to gender equality.
