Tanzania injects 48.8bn/- into the universal health insurance

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian  government  has officially begun the implementation of the Universal Health Insurance Program for indigent households by providing 48.8bn/-  to enable citizens of special groups to access health services reliably.

Through the implementation, a total of 172,297 households have already been reached and included in the program, while 463,228 beneficiaries have begun receiving various medical services at registered facilities in the country

Presenting the Budget Speech, Minister for Health Mohamed Mchengerwa said that this implementation demonstrates the Government’s commitment to ensuring that every Tanzanian receives quality health services regardless of their economic status, as part of the journey towards comprehensive health services for all citizens.

In strengthening the health sector in line with the implementation of the plan, professional councils and boards have continued to monitor the quality of services by registering 14,310 health professionals, a step that increases the workforce necessary for the delivery of services in the country.

He said that regarding access to medical services, a total of 330 pharmacies have been registered with 3,004 pharmacists, while 3,643 health service centres have been registered to increase access to services closer to the citizens.

In ensuring that professionalism and ethics continue to be observed, especially at this time of serving more citizens through the Health Insurance system, 654 private health centers have been inspected to ensure they meet standards and provide safe services to the citizens.

These achievements reflect the government’s major steps in building a strong health system that cares about equity, quality and access to services for all, while Universal Health Insurance continues to be an important pillar of social and economic development.

    For legal acquisition, citizens must typically apply to local authorities and the Tanzania Police Force for a permit, followed by purchasing from authorized dealers like Tanganyika Arms.
