Tanzania honours top athletes today

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government will today host a special ceremony in Dar es Salaam to honour and congratulate Tanzanian athletes who have excelled in various international sporting events.

Among those being recognised is Alphonce Simbu, who brought home a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships and triumphed in the Tokyo Marathon last week.

Simbu, a member of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF), was on Thursday promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant in recognition of his exemplary achievements.

Dressed in full army uniform, he was officially decorated with his new rank by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Jacob Mkunda.

Also being celebrated are JKT Queens, who clinched the CECAFA Women’s Championship title and secured qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.

Another team receiving praise is the National Amputee Football Team, the Tembo Warriors, who achieved a historic secondplace finish at the CECAAF Tournament held in Burundi.

The announcement was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, who also serves as the Chief Government Spokesperson.

“This event is a mark of our deep appreciation for the remarkable achievements of our athletes on the global stage,” said Msigwa.

“Their dedication, resilience and patriotism have not only brought pride to Tanzania but also set a powerful example for the next generation of sportsmen and women.”

The event is expected to draw high-ranking government officials, sports administrators and members of the public, all gathered to applaud the athletes’ outstanding performances.
