Tanzania guarantees Universal Health insurance for all employees

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Chief Medical Officer of the Government, Dr Grace Magembe, has instructed Tanzanian employers to ensure  every employee has guaranteed access to medical care, a move aimed at supporting the implementation of Universal Health Insurance and achieving the goals of the National Development Vision 2050.

Dr Magembe made the call in Dar es Salaam after delivering a presentation on preparations for the implementation of Universal Health Insurance during a meeting of the CEO Roundtable of Tanzania (CEOrt).

The meeting brought together leaders from the government, private sector, and development partners.

She said the government is continuing to strengthen the implementation of the programme by developing innovative financing mechanisms and establishing a special fund that will ensure every citizen can access essential healthcare services at health facilities across the country.

Dr Magembe also explained that the government has already begun implementing the Universal Health Insurance Act, which is being rolled out in phases. The first phase started on January 6, 2025, with the digital identification of more than 3.6 million families in collaboration with the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) and Local Government Authorities.

Additionally, Dr Magembe emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening local pharmaceutical and health product manufacturing industries to ensure reliable access to medicines, create employment opportunities, and expand private sector participation as part of preparations for the full implementation of Universal Health Insurance.

Finally, the government has encouraged investors to take advantage of opportunities in the health sector, while continuing to promote public–private partnerships to improve the accessibility and quality of healthcare services in Tanzania.
