Tanzania envoy strengthens Zanzibar Potsdam Partnership

ZANZIBAR: IN a bid to deepen transcontinental bonds, Tanzanian Ambassador to Germany, Mr Hassani Iddi Mwamweta met with Potsdam Mayor Noosha Aubel at a pivotal workshop recently, reaffirming the vibrant sister-city partnership between Zanzibar and this German gem.

The event, held in Potsdam, spotlighted shared goals in sustainable development, cultural exchange and economic growth, as Mwamweta extolled Zanzibar’s strides in stability and investment allure.

Invited as an official guest, Amb Mwamweta seized the moment to paint Tanzania and Zanzibar’s key achievements.

He underscored the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar’s unwavering commitment, under President Dr Hussein Mwinyi to nurturing these ties for mutual benefit.

Highlighting Zanzibar’s political stability, enhanced safety and infrastructural leaps over the past five years, he painted a picture of a thriving island paradise, where social welfare flourishes, economies boom and sectors like the blue economy and tourism beckon global players.

“These advancements have created an inviting environment for investors and tourists alike,” Mwamweta declared, warmly inviting German entrepreneurs and travellers to explore Zanzibar’s sun-kissed shores.

He stressed how such progress aligns with Tanzania’s economic diplomacy, fostering projects that uplift lives and adapt to modern global needs.

The partnership traces back to a 2017 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Zanzibar Municipality and Potsdam, targeting sustainable urban growth, climate resilience, restoration of Zanzibar’s Kilimani Botanical Garden, and cultural exchanges.

These initiatives not only champion environmental stewardship but also ignite community involvement, educating residents on ecological preservation and sparking local conservation efforts that instill pride and responsibility.

Amb Mwamweta advocated for youth engagement, urging joint, integrated projects to ensure the legacy endures across generations.

“Our young people are the torchbearers of this alliance,” he noted, envisioning collaborations that yield tangible impacts for citizens on both sides.

Tanzania and Germany’s sister-city network continues to expand, with Zanzibar-Potsdam as a shining example.

Other thriving links include Dar es Salaam-Hamburg, Mwanza-Würzburg, Moshi-Kiel, Mtwara-Enzkreis, and Tanga-Eckenförde, weaving a tapestry of international friendship and shared prosperity.
