Tanzania envisions 99 percent completion of its AFCON preps by Dec 2026

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has intensified its preparations for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), as the government targets a 99 percent completion of all major infrastructure by December this year, the Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda has disclosed.

Makonda made the remarks on September 24, 2026, while speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam. He said preparations were continuing in various locations, noting that some training grounds in Arusha had already been planted with grass, which had begun to grow.

In Dar es Salaam, he said, construction of stands and changing rooms was ongoing, while other preparations included the installation of grass playing surfaces.

Makonda said the government was working with the organisers of the tournaments to ensure that all required infrastructure is completed on time and to the required standards.

Commenting on the situation involving some football clubs in the country, Makonda urged club leaders to use their internal mechanisms to resolve disputes in accordance with the law, their constitutions and established procedures, rather than referring every dispute to the government.

He said legal procedures for making changes to the ownership or management of football clubs were clear and should be followed accordingly.
