Tanzania enhances partnership with Korea’s UAIT in expanding skills in gemstone value addition

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has pledged to strengthen its partnership with South Korea’s United African Institute of Technology (UAIT) to expand skills development in gemstone value addition, as part of efforts to maximise returns from Tanzania’s mineral resources.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Msafiri Mbibo, made the commitment during a meeting with UAIT President, Prof Chang Ki Lee in Dodoma on July 9, saying the collaboration will enhance training offered through the Tanzania Gemological Centre (TGC).

Mbibo said the partnership will help produce more highly skilled Tanzanian experts in gemstone processing and value addition, boosting the country’s capacity to increase the value of its mineral resources while contributing to economic growth.
The two leaders also discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation in the mining sector through professional training and the adoption of modern technologies to improve the industry’s competitiveness.
Located in Arusha, the Tanzania Gemological Centre provides both long-term and short-term training programmes in gemstone value addition, supporting the government’s drive to build a skilled workforce in the minerals sector.
