Tanzania embarks on modern technology against wild animal threats

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government said it prioritizes strengthening the protection of its citizens’ lives and property against wild and destructive wild animals as part of a national strategy to manage and resolve conflicts between humans and wildlife.

This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Hamad Hassan Chande, in Parliament in Dodoma while responding to a question by Handeni MP, Charles Sungura, who wanted to know what strategy the government has to solve the challenge of elephants destroying crops and endangering lives in the Mzeli, Sindeni, and Kwamatuku areas.

“The measures taken include setting up a permanent Wildlife Officers’ station in the Handeni area for rapid response to incidents and controlling wild and destructive wildlife, strengthening patrols to control wild and destructive wildlife, continuing to use modern technologies in controlling wild and destructive wildlife and the use of drones, along with continuing to educate citizens about friendly methods of dealing with wild and destructive wildlife” Chande

Chande added that, in the 2025/26 financial year, the Government has begun preparing a national guideline for the use of solar electric fencing and similar technologies to establish a good system for building infrastructure, which has already shown great success in several countries in Africa and here in the country within the boundaries of the Ikorongo Wildlife Community and the villages bordering that area.
