DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has conveyed its condolences to the Royal Family and the people of the Kingdom of Norway following the death of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway.

Conveying the condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Tanzania, President Samia Suluhu Hassan said she was deeply saddened by the news of King Harald V’s death and extended her sympathies to the Royal Family and the people of Norway.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I convey our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to His Majesty King Haakon VIII, the Royal Family, and the people of the Kingdom of Norway. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” President Samia said.

Norway’s King Harald has died at the age of 89 after more than 35 years on the throne, the Royal Palace has said.

The monarch, who had been on sick leave for several weeks, passed away peacefully at Oslo Hospital at 6.35am local time on Friday, the palace said on its website.

Harald, who was Europe’s oldest living monarch, was taken into hospital on 17 August for treatment for a bacterial infection in his blood.

His son, the Crown Prince Haakon, became Norway’s new king on Friday after the death of his father.

The late king had suffered from numerous health issues in recent years, and was eventually fitted with a permanent pacemaker. While refusing to abdicate, Harald was forced to make “permanent reduction” to his public engagements “out of consideration for his age” in April 2024.
