Tanzania calls for strong unity in accelerating the nuclear energy for Africa development

KIGALI: THE Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Felchesmi Mramba, said that regional cooperation is crucial in accelerating the adoption of nuclear energy to ensure access to safe, reliable and development-oriented energy across Africa.

The Permanent Secretary made the statement during a ministerial panel discussion at the Second Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA 2026) taking place in Kigali noting that the development of nuclear energy cannot be achieved effectively if African countries operate independently, citing the high costs involved, infrastructure requirements and the specialised expertise needed in the sector.

Explaining on the initiatives taken by Tanzania, he said that the country is already investing in regional electricity interconnection projects linking national power grids with neighbouring countries including Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi as part of efforts to strengthen energy distribution within the region.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of investing in local expertise development, strong regulatory systems and modern infrastructure to ensure nuclear energy contributes to industrialisation and long-term economic growth.

The second Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa was officially opened on May 18, 2026 by Paul Kagame and is expected to conclude on May 21, 2026.
