Tanzania bolsters reforms in mining sector in line with its Vision 2050 goals

GEITA: PRIME Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has directed the Ministry of Minerals to strengthen the management of the mining sector in order to enhance productivity in line with the country’s Development Vision 2050.

Dr Nchemba issued the directives on Saturday of October 03rd, 2026 during the closing ceremony of the Ninth National Mining Technology Exhibition held at the Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan grounds in Geita Municipal Council.

He said that, in line with the theme of the exhibition, “Minerals are Wealth, Let Us Take Responsibility Together,” everyone has a responsibility to effectively manage the mining sector in order to achieve the objectives of National Vision 2050.

“This theme has come at the right time, considering the vast mineral wealth that we have been blessed with as a nation,” Dr Mwigulu said.

He said the government had already begun implementing National Vision 2050, which provides a roadmap for building a competitive and inclusive economy driven by knowledge, innovation and the use of technology.

He said that, recognising the mining sector as an important pillar of the national economy, the government had amended the law requiring 10 per cent of mineral revenues to be allocated to mineral exploration and research.

The Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, said Tanzania had so far reached 16 per cent in mineral exploration, adding that the new legislation would further strengthen management and expand exploration activities.

He said education and training for small-scale miners were continuing to ensure that they embraced the use of science and technology and abandoned misconceptions involving the use of superstition in mining activities.

Geita Regional Commissioner, Mr Alexander Mnyeti, said the Mining Technology Exhibition had continued to serve as a platform for expanding the use of technology in mining operations.

“We must continue promoting the use of technologies that can identify mineral-rich areas, improve efficiency in mining and mineral processing, and reduce mineral losses,” he said.

He said there is also a need to increase investment in mineral processing in Tanzania so that the country would not remain merely a producer of minerals, but would become a key player throughout the mining value chain.

The Managing Director of Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), Ashraf Suryaningrat, said the company is firmly committed to working with the government to develop the mining sector.

He said, in line with National Vision 2050, GGML is committed not only to producing mineral resources but also to developing skilled human resources with the knowledge and capacity required to advance modern mining.
