Tanzania bolsters distribution of fertilizer, seeds to farmers ahead of new planting season

MPANDA: THE Tanzanian government has assured farmers that fertiliser and seeds are being distributed across the country in preparation for the 2026/27 farming season, with the move aimed at preventing input shortages and delays that could affect crop production.
Agriculture Minister Daniel Chongolo gave the assurance on October 4, 2026, while inspecting the Tanzania Fertiliser Company (TFC) sales centre in Mpanda, Katavi Region, saying the ongoing distribution was intended to ensure farmers access key inputs on time and prepare their farms ahead of the planting season.
Elaborating, the minister stated that fertiliser has already started reaching various sales centres across the country, enabling farmers to prepare their fields in time, increase productivity and improve crop production.
“Timely availability of agricultural inputs is critical in addressing challenges that have previously delayed farming activities and affected farmers’ efficiency,” he said.
Katavi Regional Commissioner Mwanamvua Mrindoko said fertiliser demand in the region for the 2026/27 season is projected to exceed 25,000 tonnes, describing the increase as an indication that farmers were increasingly recognising the importance of fertiliser in improving productivity and crop yields.

TFC Distribution and Transport Manager Sango Gungu said the Mpanda sales centre serves 23,000 farmers through 20 agents across Katavi.
He said TFC plans to distribute 5,000 tonnes of fertiliser in the region during the 2026/27 season, comprising 2,000 tonnes of DAP, 2,500 tonnes of UREA and 500 tonnes of CAN, with 1,192 tonnes of DAP already received.
Nationally, TFC targets distributing 150,000 tonnes of fertiliser for food crops, with 33,524 tonnes of DAP so far received and distributed through sales centres across the country.
