Tanzania begins to erect 280 communication towers in strategic areas

SONGWE: THE Tanzanian government, through the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF), is set to construct a new phase of 280 communication towers across the country, focusing on border zones, wildlife reserves, and key railway corridors, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and TAZARA line, to enhance connectivity and national security.
UCSAF Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Peter Mwasalyanda, said the initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure no area is left behind in accessing reliable communication service.
He made the remarks yesterday in Songwe Region, near the Tanzania–Zambia border, during an inspection tour by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication and Information Technology, Mr Mohammed Abdulla, who assessed communication networks in villages bordering Malawi and Zambia.
Engineer Mwasalyanda said the project will strengthen access to telecommunication services in all areas of strategic importance, including those crucial for security, tourism, and national development.
“The new phase aims to close communication gaps in border communities and along key national infrastructure routes, ensuring that every Tanzanian enjoys equal access to digital services,” he said.

He added that the ongoing construction of 758 towers, which is already over 98 per cent complete, has expanded coverage to 1,407 villages that previously lacked mobile network services.
“The success of this project has transformed lives. Residents can now access financial services, online education, digital trade, and other e-solutions that spur socio-economic growth,” he said.
Engineer Mwasalyanda stressed that the implementation aligns with President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of building a Digital Tanzania, where modern communication technology reaches every citizen.
“Our mission under the Sixth Phase Government is clear to ensure inclusivity in the digital era and promote innovation-driven development,” he affirmed.
