Tanzania begins process to establish Public Health College

GENEVA: TANZANIA has begun process to establish a Public Health Medicine College through regional cooperation of the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) in renewed efforts to strengthen public health medicine expertise, the government’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Grace Magembe, has disclosed today, May 26, 2026.
Dr Magembe announced the move after leading the Tanzanian delegation in the meeting with Dr Shiva Murugasampilay from the Zimbabwe College of Public Health Physicians and the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) College of Public Health Physicians, in Geneva, Switzerland where they discussed the opportunity for Tanzania to establish such important training in the country.
“Through these discussions, Tanzania has had the opportunity to learn how various ECSA-HC member countries have successfully conducted these trainings at different stages of implementation, while it was explained that these trainings help increase the number of public health professionals and strengthen health care systems”, she said.

In addition, Dr Magembe explained that Tanzania has discussed how best to benefit from these trainings by using existing professionals in the country as well as its health and training institutions, which will help increase the country’s capacity to address public health challenges and various diseases.
“Following these discussions, Tanzania will discuss this issue through the Directorate of Training of the Ministry of Health together with the relevant councils to provide guidance on how to fully participate in these important trainings in collaboration with the ECSA-HC community,” she said.
