Tanzania banks on road expansion at Tunduma border Post to ease traffic congestion

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government is implementing a road expansion project in Tunduma, Songwe Region, to ease traffic congestion and improve the movement of cargo from the Port of Dar es Salaam to neighbouring countries, including Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),the Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega has revealed.

The minister made the statement at the Parliament in Dodoma today, June 3, 2026 adding that the project has been prioritised by the President’s administration due to the strategic role Tunduma plays in Tanzania’s economy and regional trade.

Moreover, he said that the decision followed directives issued by the Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba during a visit to the area, where he ordered immediate measures to address congestion along the busy transport corridor.

Elaborating, he said that the Ministry has already engaged local contractor NARUMO to undertake the expansion works, with the road section being upgraded from its initial 700 metres to more than one kilometre following the completion of project designs.

The project is expected to improve traffic flow and strengthen trade links between Tanzania and neighbouring countries.
