Tanzania advances ICT subjects to suit technological demand

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Jerry Silaa, has called on teachers from nursery schools to universities across the country to establish digital clubs aimed at encouraging youth to acquire skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Speaking in Dar es Salaam during the 2025 International Girls in ICT Day celebration, Minister Silaa said that such clubs will help address various social challenges through the use of technology.

Silaa noted that the government is continuously improving school and university curricula to ensure that ICT subjects keep pace with the rapid advancement of technology. He added that the reforms are also intended to build students’ capacity for innovation that can offer solutions to societal problems.

He further stated that the government’s efforts to help young people—especially girls—achieve their dreams depend heavily on the implementation of these new curricula. He also revealed that the government has solid plans to ensure the country benefits from the digital economy in all sectors, including improving access to high-speed internet services.

He emphasized that proper use of ICT can provide knowledge that empowers individuals economically and promotes community development.Meanwhile, the Director General of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), Dr. Jabir Bakari, said the event was aimed at boosting creativity in the ICT sector and stimulating the growth of the digital economy.

Dr. Bakari explained that TCRA has introduced digital clubs starting from primary schools, with the goal of increasing awareness of ICT, promoting tech-based project development, and solving socio-economic challenges. He added that through these training programs, students are expected to be inspired to pursue studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and achieve their academic and professional goals.
