Tanzania acts tough against cybercrime practitioners

DODOMA: THE Ministry of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, in collaboration with media stakeholders, has launched a special campaign aimed at educating the public on the proper use of social media and strengthening cybersecurity.
The move also aims to address cybercrime, particularly online abuse against women,
Speaking in during the Parliament session in Dodoma, the Deputy Minister for Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Engineer Maryprisca Mahundi, insisted that the government continues to take strong action against individuals involved in gender-based violence through social media platforms.
She also issued a stern warning to those engaging in such behavior and ordered them to stop immediately.
Adding, Engineer Mahundi said the educational campaign targets various groups, including Secondary School students and women, with the goal of raising awareness on cybersecurity and the dangers of technology misuse.

Furthermore, the Ministry has partnered with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, and other development partners to discuss effective strategies to enhance online safety and eliminate the abuse of women on digital platforms.
Additionally, she said the government continues to enforce the Cybercrimes Act of 2015 and the Data Protection Act of 2022, both designed to safeguard internet users, particularly women, from online abuse and digital violence.
These measures are part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure a safe, inclusive, and rights-respecting digital environment for all Tanzanians.
