Tanesco spices up clean energy campaign with electric stoves

TABORA: TANZANIA Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has recorded success in its initiative to connect rural and urban residents with an electric stove system on credit.
The programme has come a few days after the corporation officially launched a programme known in Kiswahili as Konekt Umeme, Pika kwa Umeme (Connect Electricity, Cook with an electric stove).
This programme, which is being implemented nationwide, is part of the National Energy Compact that aims to connect 8.5 million Tanzanian citizens to electricity by 2030, equivalent to approximately 1.7 million new customers each year.
Residents across Tanzanian regions have begun to benefit from this program since the official start of the exercise on October 15, 2025.
Many have expressed their satisfaction with the programme, especially since it aims to enable low-income earners to obtain electric stoves on credit, which has helped them start using clean and safe energy for cooking.
In addition, these citizens have requested that TANESCO ensure the availability of low-power stoves in large quantities due to the high demand that has arisen
They have explained that the use of electricity for cooking is cheaper and safer compared to other fuels such as charcoal and firewood, so it is important that education on the use of electricity in the kitchen continues to be provided to citizens.
The implementation of this program is being carried out in collaboration with the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) Project, funded by the British government. New customers connected to electricity will be able to pay for the stoves in installments through their electricity bills.
