TANESCO plans power expansion in Ilemela District

MWANZA: SEVERAL areas in Ilemela District are set to benefit from electricity expansion projects in the 2026/2027 financial year as Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) plans to improve power supply and connect more households and public facilities.

TANESCO Ilemela Acting Manager, Mr Ally Mustapha said Bwiru Elimu A in Pasiansi Ward will receive a 600-metre low-voltage line, while Bwiru Elimu B will be connected through a 1.7-kilometre low-voltage line.

Speaking during a recent Ilemela Municipal Council meeting, Mr Mustapha said needs assessments and cost estimates for the two projects had already been completed and submitted to the TANESCO Regional Office for further implementation.

“Kabuhoro B Street in Songambele has also been included in the electricity expansion programme under the M300 Project, whose implementation is expected in the 2026/2027 financial year after completion of assessments,” he said.

Mr Mustapha added that Nyafula Dispensary in Sangabuye Ward is expected to be connected to electricity by August 2026 after completion of payment procedures.

For Kilabela, Bujingwa and Nkoronto villages, he said assessments had already been completed and the projects would involve the construction of both major and minor power lines once equipment such as poles, cables and transformers become available.

“Other areas of Bugogwa will continue to be assessed to ensure that more wananchi receive electricity services during the 2026/2027 financial year,” he said.

Mr Mustapha further said TANESCO plans to install a 200 kVA transformer in Majanini area, Mecco Ward, by September 2026 to address power shortages that have affected residents. The planned projects are expected to improve electricity access, strengthen public services and reduce power supply challenges in parts of Ilemela District.
