TANAPA steps up process to incorporate Umba River into Mkomazi Park

TANGA: The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), in collaboration with the Tanga Regional Administration and Mkinga District Council, has begun implementing a compensation exercise for residents of Makota Village, Mwakijembe Ward in Mkinga District. The compensation aims to relocate residents to allow the Umba River buffer zone to be officially incorporated into Mkomazi National Park.

Speaking during the event, Tanga Regional Commissioner,  Dr Batilda Buriani said the initiative is significant as it will open new opportunities for the region by creating an additional gateway for receiving tourists and investors through Mkinga District. She noted that the move also aims to strengthen sustainable conservation in Mkomazi National Park, and that the anticipated increase in tourist arrivals will substantially contribute to national economic growth, compared to the previous 6.4percent contribution.

Dr. Buriani further explained that incorporating the area into the park will help control destructive wildlife, particularly elephants that frequently invade residential areas and destroy property, especially during farming seasons and dry periods. She urged TANAPA to continue addressing challenges posed by dangerous wildlife and mentioned some of the equipment provided, including bee-drone technology used to deter animals from entering human settlements.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Conservation Commissioner and Northern Zone Chief, Steria Ndaga, stated that a total of 115 residents are expected to be relocated to pave the way for conservation activities, and that compensation assessments have been completed. She added that the area boasts scenic landscapes attractive to tourists especially lovers of plants, birds, and wildlife and multiple studies conducted have demonstrated its national conservation value.

Mkinga District Commissioner, Gilbert Kilima, thanked the public for their cooperation throughout the entire process and emphasised that the responsibility of maintaining and protecting conservation efforts belongs to all citizens.

The compensation exercise is being supervised by TANAPA in collaboration with the Regional Commissioner’s Office, the district authorities, and leaders at the ward, village, and sub-village levels to ensure that each beneficiary receives their compensation according to the assessments conducted by certified valuers.
