TACTIC launches a 19bn/- infrastructure project to upgrade Korogwe municipality

KOROGWE: THE Tanzanian government has launched a 19bn/- urban infrastructure project in Korogwe Town, Tanga Region, targeting improved mobility, drainage and a stronger local economy.
Implemented through the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency, the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) project will see the construction of 10.4 kilometres of tarmac roads alongside modern storm water drainage systems to ease flooding within the town centre.
Acting Korogwe Town Director, Burhan Ngulungu, said the project will channel rainwater safely to the Pangani River, addressing long-standing drainage challenges while opening up the town for business growth.

Additionally, he noted that a key road linking Kijazi Bus Stand to Kilole Market will significantly improve access to transport and sanitation services, creating a more conducive environment for traders and small-scale entrepreneurs while boosting municipal revenue.
Korogwe Urban MP, Charles Njama, said the project will deliver lasting benefits to residents across several wards, including Bagamoyo, Mgombezi, Mtonga, Manundu, Masuguru and Magunga.

The MP said the NMB–Magunga road was critical for improving access to healthcare, noting that its upgrade to tarmac standard will ease transportation of patients to Magunga Hospital from Korogwe, Handeni and Lushoto.
The TACTIC project coordinator for Korogwe, Engineer Charles Kamugisha, said works are scheduled for completion by January 23, 2027.

The project includes the construction of NMB–Magunga (2.7km), Bagamoyo–Mgombezi–Kibo (6.5km), and Kijazi Bus Stand–Kilole Market (1.2km), as well as 1.43 kilometres of storm water drains.
He added that the project is financed through concessional funding from the World Bank.
TARURA Korogwe District Manager, Engineer Zakayo Magoro, said the agency’s tarmac road network in the town will expand from 16.1km to 26.5km upon completion, raising land value, enhancing the town’s outlook and cutting recurring maintenance costs.
