TACAIDS, GGML launch 23rd Kili Challenge to support HIV fight

GEITA: THE Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), in collaboration with the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), is hosting the 23rd edition of the Kili Challenge, a flagship fundraising initiative aimed at supporting national efforts to combat HIV and AIDS.
The flag-off is scheduled for this Friday, with the reception of participants on July 24th this year.
This year’s edition holds special significance as GGML marks 25 years of operation in Tanzania.
A commemorative flag will be raised at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to mark the 25th anniversary.
“This challenge is a physical test, promoting the proactive role we can all take in maintaining our own health and wellness and a dedication to sustaining progress in the national response to HIV & AIDS,” said Stephen Mhando, Public Relations and Communications Manager at GGML also serving as the Kili Trust Fund Manager.
Held annually since 2002, the Kili Challenge mobilises individuals and organisations to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak and cycle 430 kilometres across the base of the Mountain.
Both the hiking and cycling activities span seven days, serving as a symbol of endurance and social responsibility cementing the company’s commitment to addressing national health priorities.

Mr Mhando said the 2025 event will be held under the theme “What if we gave up?” highlighting the importance of persistence, partnership and continued investment in one of the continent’s most persistent public health challenges.
Since its inception, the Kili Challenge has raised funds that have supported numerous organisations, whose work directly impacts the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.
These funds support hospitals, clinics, orphanages and community-based organisations working toward the three national targets: zero new infections, zero deaths from HIV/ AIDS and zero stigma.
Participants include employees from GGML, representatives from TACAIDS, and stakeholders from across various sectors.
Their shared commitment reflects a unified drive to support Tanzania’s fight against HIV and AIDS while promoting wellness and collective action.
“GGML is proud to walk this journey with our partners, contributing to community health and collective action,” Mr Mhando said.
